Age UK London invite you to:
Age Awareness Workshop as part of their Age Allies Programme
31st May 2018, 9.30am-1.30pm
Age UK London, Tavis House, 1-6 Tavistock Square, WC1H 9NA
No matter what specialism your organisation has, we all know how important it is to consider each individual person you work with in all the diverse aspects of their identity and life experience. Individuals who are older are no exception.
Ageism is the only prejudice where we discriminate against that which we hope to be and which we will, barring accident or illness, become. It is in our language, our expectations and our assumptions. Ageism further compounds inequalities experienced by other groups.
Why come to the workshop?
We all hold unconscious biases and beliefs about different social and identity groups as we organise our social worlds by categorising. These categorised beliefs can coalesce into stereotypes affecting our attitudes and behaviours which, in turn effect how we interact with older people. If we don't uncover and reassess these attitudes, we are likely to eventually embody those stereotypes ourselves - when our unconsciously pre-defined time comes!
The Age Allies workshop has been developed in collaboration with older people and is designed to help participants identify unconscious attitudes and assumptions about older people. It uses a series of interactive exercises and is co-facilitated by older people. You will find the workshop both challenging and fun, and it will broaden your awareness of the experience of ageing.
